Medical adaptations
Medical adaptations are changes made to your home to make it easier for you to move around and do everyday tasks. If you find it difficult to access parts of your home, see if we can help make things easier for you.

What is a medical adaptation?

We recognise that your housing needs can change over the years you're living with us, whether it be through ill-health, disability or old age. These changes can sometimes mean that certain parts of your home are no longer suitable for you. Some of the most common issues include:

  • Getting in and out of the bath
  • Doors being too narrow for wheelchairs
  • Steps to the house restricting access

We can overcome many of these problems by making adaptations to your home, such as:

  • Fitting a walk-in shower
  • Widening the doorways
  • Providing ramp access to the house
How to apply?

There are different ways to apply for adaptations, depending on what you need.

In most cases, you need to be referred by your GP or an Occupational Therapist. The referral should include the type of adaptation you need and the level of priority, either A or B (A being the highest) for the adaptation.

For some smaller adaptations, like grab rails, you can complete the self referral form to the right. If you need help to do this, please contact your onsite Trust representative (applicable to services with an onsite presence only), your Customer Partner or email the team at MAdaptations@trustha.org.uk..

You can also contact us to request a paper form if you would prefer and return this to our Edinburgh office.

We will check if there is funding available for the adaptation and let you know if the referral can go ahead. If all is well, we will tell you when we can start the work and either an architect or contractor will visit you beforehand to look at what needs to be done.

Adaptations FAQs

We can arrange to complete adaptations to your home for you. This page gives you general information about adaptations and how to apply for them, but you can get in touch to find out more about how we can help by contacting your onsite Trust representative (applicable to services with an onsite presence only), your Customer Partner or emailing the team at MAdaptations@trustha.org.uk.

No, we only need to know medical information relevant to what you have applied for to help us identify the most suitable type of adaptation for your specific needs.

No, you can apply directly to Trust using either the referral form from your GP or Occupational Therapist, or the self referral form depending on what level of adaptation is required. However, our team are always on hand to help with your application if you want them to.

If eligible these adaptations are funded by the Scottish Government through funding which they allocate every year. We can only carry out adaptations if there are funds available, which can sometimes mean you have to wait for adaptations to take place.

If there is no funding left for the year, we will add your application to the waiting list. We will then work through the waiting list and carry out adaptations in order of priority level once new funding is made available.
